The next guest of Migration Research Group is Zsofia Nagy who joins us to discuss her recent fieldwork. Her findings are based on fieldwork carried out in Crete by a research group from Eötvös Loránd University during the summer of 2017 and focuses on the realization of the UNHCR refugee accommodation scheme locally. While Greece has been well known for facing the dual task of handling its economic crisis and its responsibilities related to the tens of thousands of refugees stuck in the country, so far, the island of Crete has been somewhat removed from these developments. It is in this context that the accomodation programme was shaped and introduced during 2017 on the island. Interviews were carried out with local mayors, project leaders, academics and refugees who participate in the programme in the towns of Chania, Rethimno and Heraklion.

Zsofia Nagy is an alumna of CEU Sociology and Social Anthropology department, and Eötvös Loránd University, School of Sociology. She works on questions of migration, social memory and political sociology. She is currently an assistant professor at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest.

Organized by the Migration Research Group at the Department of Political Science.

Bringing together the diverse migration scholarship at CEU departments, research centers, and other units, the Migration Research Group (MiRG) has been established in 2016, providing a platform across disciplines for faculty, students and researchers at CEU who have an interest in the study of mobility and migration. The group holds regular meetings for informal and congenial debate of migration topics and to discuss ongoing research of the members with a specialized audience.
