In 2020 CEU achieved its best ever ranking for research and teaching by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a leading provider of higher education global rankings.
CEU ranks at 30 in Politics and International Studies, positioning itself in the top 50 universities worldwide in this subject.
At CEU the subjects of Politics and International Studies are represented by the Department of Political Science, the Department of International Relations, and the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations. At a time when the Hungarian government has expelled CEU from Budapest, CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff observed, “how ironic it is that the government seeks to drive us out when the rankings establish CEU’s position as the number 1 research university in Hungary.”
The rankings position CEU as greatly contributing to the global reputation enjoyed by Vienna's world renowned universities, in the year when CEU moves its teaching programs to the Austrian capital.
Rector Ignatieff added: “As we look towards launching our first ever undergraduate programs this fall in Vienna, we’re proud of our record as one of the world’s foremost research and learning institutions. Faculty and staff at CEU can take real pride in their accomplishments.”
With two subjects in the top 50 universities worldwide (Philosophy and Politics and International Studies), three in the top 100 (History, Social Policy and Administration and Sociology) and an additional two in the top 200 (Law and Economics and Econometrics), CEU tops all other universities in Hungary in these subjects. Looking at the broader subject areas, in Arts and Humanities worldwide, CEU is number 120. In the Social Sciences, we are 170. In these categories, we rank second in Austria, just behind University of Vienna.
