Political Theory

Track representative: Zoltan Miklosi

Track description

The Political Theory track has affiliations with both the Doctoral Program in Political Science and the Doctoral Program in Philosophy. The track brings the two programs into close cooperation in training doctoral students. The cooperation enables Political Theory students to be part of both the community of Political Science and Philosophy doctoral students and faculty. It expands the range of course offerings for PhD students with an interest in, on the one hand, moral and political philosophy, and, on the other hand, institutional political theory, thus building up a critical mass of scholars working on topics related to political theory.

The Political Theory track is designed to attract scholars who plan to work on normative problems in politics. The collaboration between the two doctoral programs is intended to make the track appealing to applicants whose interests are in foundational theoretical questions as well as those attracted to normative questions related to specific political institutions and practices.

The PT track’s affiliation with both the Political Science and Philosophy doctoral programs offers unique opportunities such as:

  • Enhanced flexibility to PhD students in designing their own study plans/curricula that best fit their projects and interests by enabling them to customize the number of Philosophy credits they may take to fulfill the credits requirements of the Doctoral Program in Political Science.
  • Joint supervision by Political Science and Philosophy faculty
  • Reserved spots in the Philosophy doctoral seminar
  • Mentoring by both Political Science and Philosophy faculty
  • Political Theory/Philosophy workshops, conferences and lectures jointly organized by the departments of Philosophy and Political Science
  • Networking opportunities in both Political Science and Philosophy communities of practice
