Unfortunately the lecture by Stephen Haggard on Development, Democracy and Welfare States will not be taking place this Tuesday - Professor Haggard's plane was diverted because of bad weather conditions and he will not be able to make it in Budapest on time.

We are trying to reschedule the event, and hopefully we will have a chance to invite you to a lecture by Prof Haggard some time in the future.

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

Dr Stephan Haggard is a Lawrence and Sallye Krause Professor of Korea-Pacific Studies at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, University of California San Diego. Dr Haggard will present his most recent book, Development, Democracy and Welfare State, (co-authoried with Robert Kaufman) which traces the origins of social policy in East Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. The book compares the different welfare paths of these regions following democratization and the move toward more open economies, and examines the contradictory influences of transformations, which created pressures to reform the existing welfare systems, and economic performance and welfare legacies which constrained the scope of reforms.
