My research focuses on how public opinion shapes the strategic incentives for both the EU and Hungary in addressing democratic backsliding, providing a novel perspective on public pressure in EU governance. My PhD specifically examines the role of public pressure and citizens' political attitudes in influencing the strategic choices made by the EU and backsliding member states like Hungary. While these states face domestic pressures, the European Union must also navigate public opinion in its decision-making, especially in light of increasing politicization and the rise of a European public sphere. I apply survey experiments in backsliding and non-backsliding member states, as well as correspondence field experiments, to understand the role of politicization behind the EU's changing policy on sanctioning anti-democrtaic developments.

I am working with quantitative methods focusing on causal identification, including survey experiments, field experiments and quasi-experimental methods. I have an interest in EU politicization, institutions and the combination of decision-making theories with political behaviour.
