Public Policy PhD student Vija Pakalkaite presented at the ECPR Conference on Regulatory Governance
CEU Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations doctoral student Vija Pakalkaite presented two papers at the Sixth Biennial Conference of the Standing Group on Regulatory Governance organised by the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) in Tilburg, the Netherlands.
The first, a single-author paper, ‘Using EU Directives as Opportunity Structures to Implement Energy Reforms: Strategic Games of Lithuania’, analyses the recent reform in the Lithuanian natural gas sector through the lenses of power games by domestic actors and international actors.
The second is a joint paper written with an alumnus of CEU Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations Dr. Philipp Thaler. In the latter paper, called ‘Real-time Compliance Tames Intergovernmentalism: Commission Influence on Member States’ External Energy Policy’, the authors analyse the practical and theoretical implications of the European Commission’s unprecedented involvement in generally bilateral energy negotiations with private energy suppliers. Both papers are complementary in the sense that they unpack the dynamics between the supranational and the national levels in EU energy policy making.
The Biennial Conference is the leading interdisciplinary conference on regulation and regulatory governance held in Europe, attracting researchers from all over the globe working in a wide range of disciplines including political science, law, accounting, business, sociology, economics, international relations, anthropology, public administration, and other related disciplines. The sixth Biennial Conference was held from 6 July to Friday 8 July 2016.
The ECPR is Europe’s prime organization in political science, and its conferences stand out within the academic community.
