Global Hierarchies and Migration

Attila Melegh
Type:
Lecture
Building:
Nador u. 15
Room:
101 Quantum
Date:
March 21, 2019 - 5:20pm to 7:00pm

abstract | A critique of radical - and by now mainstream - anti-immigrant populism in Europe without a systemic critique of capital and political economy is misleading in many respects. Without re-embedding migration into its social context, critiques repeat only utilitarian calculations why migration is advantageous and/or Kantian ideals of humanitarianism, peaceful co-existence and the rejection of racisms as verbal and institutionalized acts.

Type:
Lecture
Building:
Nador u. 15
Room:

Date:
March 22, 2019 - 1:30pm to 3:10pm

ABSTRACT / What drives support for the central public demands of a Revolution (its master narrative) once the protesters win? The largest, most successful episodes of recent “revolution” are often thought to have lasting effects on political preferences, becoming crucial reference points that redefine or consolidate preexisting cleavages around the master narrative.

Currency statecraft, central bank policies and transaction costs: the case of RMB internationalization

Marina Zucker Marques
Type:
Lecture
Building:
Nador u. 15
Room:
101 Quantum
Date:
March 14, 2019 - 5:20pm to 7:00pm

ABSTRACT / Especially after the 2008 crisis, the international use of the RMB has substantially increased. A body of literature in international political economy (IPE) has reemerged to discuss the determinants of currency internationalization. Within the IPE literature, the role of market-forces is usually much emphasized to the detriment of studies on the role of governmental actors. This article aims to fill this gap by arguing that Central Banks policies are very important, especially at early stages of currency internationalization.
